Kendo is the modern form of the original Japanese sword fighting as learnt and practised by the samurai. However, the training not only teaches the techniques and tactics of sword fighting itself, but also includes the mental training of the trainee. The aim is to develop concentration, stamina, resilience and skill as well as decisiveness and responsiveness. Mental strengths such as self-discipline, responsibility, team spirit and, above all, fairness are also considered particularly important training goals. Jörg Potrafki explains the history and philosophy of the sport in his guide.
